Westlock’s Capri Mall is set for demolition over the next six months.

The town of Westlock approved an application from a contractor to demolish the mall on July 25. The contractor is required to complete the demolition within 180 days of the application being approved which means the mall can be demolished no later than Jan. 21, 2026.

Asbestos removal at the mall has been under way since May as the demolition is currently being prepared.

Capri Mall was once a thriving hub for business in Westlock following its opening in 1972 but began to decline in the 1990s. The mall was acquired by Calgary-based Capri Capital Corp. following a foreclosure but continued to decline with many of the businesses vacating the mall including the closing of Liquidation World in 2014, the mall’s main storefront.

The mall steadily fell into a state of disrepair and was forced to permanently close in May 2023 following a safety inspection which identified significant safety risks including non-functional fire alarms, sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers.

Many businesses vacated the mall over the years including Domino’s Pizza, Health Smart and Wellness, Integra Agencies Ltd., Small Town Vapes, Top Shelf Liquor, Westlock Barber Shop, Your Dollar Store and several others.

Most of these businesses relocated within Westlock but Domino’s has not yet opened another restaurant in town.

The town hasn’t received any applications for work at the site after the demo.
