CLYDE – Speeders on 47th Avenue and the village’s truck route will soon see another stop sign erected aimed to slow down the traffic. On Sept. 9, during Clyde council’s regular meeting, they unanimously voted in favour of putting up a stop sign at the corner of 47th Avenue and 47th Street.
The village’s Community Peace Officer suggested they either install a three-way stop sign or an automated speed enforcement advisory board alerting drivers of their speed and telling them to slow down to help deter speeders.
“By doing nothing it changes nothing,” said Mayor Charis Aguirre. “Another sign may help.”
Coun. Alex Strembesky agreed, saying “We have to show we are doing something.”
But Strembesky said a flashing sign would be too expensive and may not be a deterrent.
Deputy Mayor Alma Cruise Irwin said she sees the point of a stop sign but added that if the village has a Citizens on Patrol (COP) they would have the right to report non-compliant drivers.
Mayor Aguirre said they should see if they can get a few people interested in starting a COP in Clyde.
“It might be something worth doing.”
