COVID-19 outbreaks declared at Westlock, Athabasca hospitals

Outbreaks declared at Athabasca and Westlock respectively on Sept. 19 and Sept. 29

WESTLOCK/ATHABASCA — Two COVID-19 outbreaks have been declared at the Westlock and Athabasca Healthcare Centres over the last two weeks.

According to a list of acute care outbreaks maintained by Alberta Health Services (AHS), a COVID-19 outbreak was declared for one unit at the Athabasca Healthcare Centre Sept. 19.

Four healthcare workers and 17 patients have tested positive for COVID-19. That represents an increase of four patient cases since the list was last updated Sept. 26.

Similarly, an outbreak was declared for one unit at the Westlock Healthcare Centre Sept. 29. Two patients and one healthcare worker have tested positive for COVID-19.

As noted on the AHS website, outbreak control measures have been implemented for each of the affected units. Any patients that has tested positive or is exhibiting symptoms is isolated and treated in designated rooms.

"All at-risk patients on each unit have been tested. Contact tracing for patients and healthcare workers potentially exposed to these individuals is ongoing," the website states.
