Two people were taken to hospital last Thursday evening following a collision near the Petro Canada near Clyde

Police and emergency crews got a call about a two-vehicle collision at about 4 p.m. July 24 just east of the intersection of highways 2 and 18.

Westlock RCMP Const. Ryan Flear said the collision occurred after a vehicle turned onto the highway.

“A male driving a semi truck turned left into the path of an eastbound Dodge truck,” he said. “There were minor injuries; the passenger of the Dodge was taken to Westlock hospital, and the driver of the same vehicle was taken for assessment given their age.”

The collision resulted in the gas tank on the semi truck being ruptured, spilling fuel onto the roadway. Roughly a dozen firefighters from town and county crews were on scene cleaning up the spill.

Traffic was restricted near the busy intersection for roughly and hour and a half.

“We continued to allow traffic to flow, and then it was closed off when the tow trucks all got there,” Flear said. “Road crews were there directing traffic to ease some of the backlog.”

No charges have been laid yet in the incident, although Flear said police will continue to investigate before making a final determination.

“It’s probably going to continue for another week,” he said.

Regardless of whether charges are laid, Flear said it’s important for drivers to exercise caution when turning onto a busy roadway.

“In the case of entering onto the highway, be sure as to what oncoming traffic is doing,” he said. “Make eye contact with oncoming vehicles prior to entering onto the roadway.”
