Westlock residents will have the opportunity this Wednesday to hear from one the leader of Alberta’s official opposition.

Barbara Wilson, the Wildrose Alliance Party’s Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock constituency association president, said the “Dessert with Danielle” event, which features party leader Danielle Smith, is meant to let people know what the party is up to.

“It’s just an informal evening for people to come hear Danielle speak, and to ask questions about their own particular concerns,” she said. “We’re just keeping people aware we’re still here in the constituency and we’re still working hard.”

The Wildrose Party has a strong following in this riding; in the 2012 election, Progressive Conservative candidate Maureen Kubinec won by a slim margin over Wildrose candidate Link Byfield.

Wilson said Byfield is not expected to seek the nomination in this riding again, which is another reason to host this event — the nomination process has not yet begun locally, and interested candidates can still put their name forward.

“We want people to know we’re here and we’re working, so if anyone is interested in running, they can contact the party,” she said.

The next provincial election must take place by 2016, but many in the provincial political sphere are suggesting the PC Party might call an election once they have elected a new leader this fall.

Regardless of party affiliation, Wilson said, there’s good reason to take the time this Wednesday to hear what Smith has to say.

“Making informed decisions is the bottom line, and the more you can hear straight from our party leader, the more you will be informed,” she said. “Being able to ask questions and voice your own concerns is a real one-on-one grassroots way of communicating, which Wildrose advocates very strongly.”

The event is scheduled for July 23 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Memorial Hall. For more information visit barrhead-morinville-westlock.wildrose.ca/dessert-wth-danielle.
