Team Gibert claims ‘A’ at first Town & Country Bonspiel since 2020

Thirty rinks compete at Jan. 5-8 event in Westlock

WESTLOCK — Team Gibert took top honours and the ‘A’ title at the first Town & Country Bonspiel hosted by the Westlock Curling Club since 2020.

Thirty teams from around the region competed in the Jan. 5-8 bonspiel, with the foursome of Jamie Gibert, Andrew Schiller, Chad Lemay, and Randy Guidinger taking the ‘A’ event title while the ‘B’ was captured by Team Lowry, which included Jill Lowry, Pete Lowry, Adelle Clark, and Hugh Clark. The ‘C’ title went to the foursome of Albert Burchett, Patrick Monpetite, Darryl Hoogers, and Mathew Burchett while the ‘D’ went to the Andersen rink which included John Guelly, Grant Andersen, Trevor Andersen, and Kristen Guelly.

Club past-president Paula Clark said it was great to see the event return after a three-year absence, noting last year’s had to be cancelled at the last minute due to then COVID-19 concerns.

“Everyone was really excited to be back as we’ve had really good support for this bonspiel from all over and we’ve had people coming to it for years and years,” she said. “A few years back, one of our members called (the event) our ‘home-opener bonspiel’ because it’s the very first of our bonspiels for the season.”

Clark said the club will now host the Open Bonspiel Feb. 10-12 and then the Men’s Bonspiel March 10-12, then will wrap the season with the league windup at the end of March, “a potluck supper where we give out prizes for the league winners. It’s a fun evening.”
