Team Luced Services defeated Team North Country HD Repair at the Westlock Golf Club Ryder Cup.
Team Luced won during the tournament that ran from June 27 to 29, with a score of 13.5 points over North Country’s 11.5 points. Points were awarded based on wins for 2-person scramble matches, best ball stroke play, 2-ball match play and individual matches.
“Golf's in such a cool spot right now, just with new people trying out the game and it's pretty cool to see 20 guys come together and not only play, but also have members and public come out and watch the event,” said Westlock Golf Club president Ryan Craig. “The club's pretty thankful to have like people like this around and to be able to be able to put on an event like this. It takes a lot of people and a lot of interest. It's a really cool and very nice thing to have in our community and it needs to stay around for sure.”
Craig captained team North Country, which also featured Adam Hardinge, Alban Macaulay, Daneel Lategan, Tom Hardinge, Jason Morgan, John McLeod, Shaun Wiese, Trent Biddiscombe and Tyler Graham.
Team Luced were led by team captain Ryan Provencal and featured Chase Provencal, Chris Mckenzie, Dwayne Casavant, Derek St. Laurent, Denis Landry, Forest Lewko, Keenan Fortier, Nathan Dyck and Ryan Medcke.
“It was kind of the younger, less experienced golfers versus some of the guys who have been here for quite a while,” said Craig. “I guess the wily veterans have pulled it off twice now, but we gave them a better run for their money this year.”
Team Luced took a two-point lead in the first round of matches on Friday, finishing their round despite the heavy rain that evening. They maintained that two-point lead in the second day with the contests ending with a lead of 8.5 to 6.5. The final day of matches went right down to the wire but ended the same way as the previous two days with team Luced two points ahead of the opposition.
The Westlock Golf Club’s Ryder Cup was modeled on the professional Ryder Cup which takes place every two years between teams from the US and Europe.
This is the second year the Westlock Golf Club has hosted their Ryder Cup with this year’s tournament being by far the more competitive edition.
“I would say just how close it was. The first year, team Cold Lake brewing won I think it was 12.5 to three or something,” said Craig. “This one came right down to the absolute last match of the day, so it was very, very competitive.”
The Westlock Golf Club will be hosting the ladies four-person scramble on July 5 and the legion golf tournament on July 12.
In August they will be hosting Westlock Open from Aug. 9-10, the Par 3 Fundraiser on August 23 and the club championships from Sept. 13-14.
