26-year-old man gets 60 days for auto theft

A 26-year-old received a 60-day jail sentence July 9 on charges of possessing stolen property at Athabasca Provincial Court.

A 26-year-old received a 60-day jail sentence July 9 on charges of possessing stolen property at Athabasca Provincial Court.

Jason Aron Oltmans pleaded guilty as he appeared via closed-circuit television, as he was incarcerated at the Edmonton Remand Centre.

Crown prosecutor Heather Fraser told the court that on Feb. 10, Oltmans attended a residence in Athabasca with a grey truck. After it was left there for a couple of hours, Oltmans told the home owners he would remove it from their property.

Fraser also told the court that during a subsequent police investigation, it was determined that the truck had been stolen. She also said that Oltmans does have a prior record, including a similar charge from 2015, which resulted in Oltmans serving a 60-day jail sentence.

Duty defence council Peter Keyes told the court that Oltmans has two kids who live with their aunt, and that the defendant was working on getting his kids back.

Keyes also mentioned that Oltmans has completed a variety of programs while being incarcerated, including being part of the centre's bootcamp drill team, attending narcotics anonymous, and facilitating the centre's bible study program. He added that the defendant also intended to reside in the Rochester area after his release.

In passing down his sentence, Judge Bruce Garriock also forbade Oltmans to possess any weapon of any kind, and was also to report to RCMP by phone when required to do so. Garriock also gave him credit for 31 days time served, meaning he had 29 days left to serve upon sentencing.

Oltmans is also to appear in court for trial Oct. 15 on two other charges, including assault with a weapon and uttering threats to cause bodily harm.

Randy Greyeyes receives $296 fine for speeding

Randy Greyeyes appeared in Athabasca Provincial Court July 9, where he pleaded guilty to driving at 135 kilometers on a 100 kilometre zone.

Fraser noted that on Jan. 17, RCMP noticed a vehicle running past the speed limit on Highway 813, where they saw the male driver switching seats with a female passenger.

She said upon further questioning, police were also able to determine that Greyeyes was also driving with a suspended license.

On the charge of speeding, Judge Garriock levelled a $296 fine, which he must pay by Sep. 10.

Greyeyes also has another court appearance that day on two counts of driving while disqualified, in order to speak about sections involving the Gladue Report.

Huppie pleads guilty to breaching conditions and possessing stolen property

A 34-year-old father of five has pleaded guilty to two charges in an Athabasca courtroom July 9.

Fraser noted on June 21, RCMP conducted a check stop, where they stopped a car, where Clayton Huppie was in the passenger seat. Police were later able to determine that the vehicle had been stolen.

Also, Fraser said that on March 15, when Huppie was 16 months into an 18 month probation order, he missed an appointment with his probation officer.

Prior to sentencing, duty council Richard Forbes noted that Huppie was employed as a heavy-duty mechanic, and that he intends to see counselling on drug and alcohol abuse.

Judge Garriock then handed down an eight day jail sentance to the defendant. As Huppie had already been in custody since June 21, his sentence was therefore considered to have been completed.
