Athabasca Playgroup is closing its doors due to lack of interest from parents.

President Cyndi Logelin explained there was no one to whom the torch could be handed.

Playgroup was a group where mothers could bring their preschool-aged children to play and the moms could have some socializing time, too.

“The board members were no longer wanting to remain on the board, and we didn’t have anyone interested in stepping up and being on the board,” said Logelin.

Each Wednesday, approximately five moms would attend the group at the Missionary Church.

“Last March, we started talking, and people had said they were not interested in continuing on the board, and that is when we started trying to find more people to come,” Logelin said. “The people coming regularly were not interested in being on the board.”

Logelin said attendance was low, too, and chalks the lack of attendance up to the fact that there were so many other activities scheduled for the same time as playgroup.

“We found that our attendance was down, and despite all our attempts, we couldn’t get anyone to come,” she explained.

The playgroup board has decided to sell all its items and will host a sale on Sept. 20 at the Missionary Church from 4–8 p.m.

“We are taking all the money from the sale and all the money from our account, and we are donating it to another non-profit organization,” she explained. “We are accepting letters until the end of the month from those organizations saying who they are and what they do and what they would use our money for.”

Send letters to Cyndi Logelin at Box 850, Athabasca, AB, T9S 2A7.

Logelin estimates by the time the sale is done, the playgroup will have $2,500 to give away.

“I’m sad that playgroup has been around for so long, and I’m sad to see it close, but I think that it will be nice to have the money go to someone who needs it,” she said, stating playgroup has been operating for 20-plus years.
