The Athabasca Rotary Spray Park is set to be open as soon as the May long weekend if weather cooperates.

ATHABASCA — The weather in Athabasca is heating up as the arrival of springtime brings longer days, clear skies, and warm sunshine. And with summer on the horizon, the Athabasca Rotary Spray Park is set to be open soon for anyone looking to cool off and make a splash at the Riverfront.

“It’s mainly the weather — we’re hoping that by the long weekend it’ll be smartened up enough that we can have it open. It’s just a flip of the switch and it’s ready to go,” public works foreman Graeme Douglas told councillors while presenting the Parks report during the May 6 council meeting.

Warren Zyla, Parks Foreman, noted repairs to the ground surface have been completed, and new wraps for the O-ring panels will be ready to be installed this week. Previously displaying images of a fish, a bird in flight and a beaver, he said the new wraps courtesy of Logo Me This will be more on the playful side.

“We got a proof, so one’s a cartoon beaver, one’s a bear in sunglasses floating on an inner tube, and the other one is a couple of kids playing in the water,” said Zyla in a follow-up.

Mayor Rob Balay also suggested town staff take a look at the outdoor exercise equipment located on the Riverfront, equipment that’s starting to show signs of wear and tear.

“Some of the equipment for the outdoor fitness centre is pretty crappy,” said Balay, who requested staff come up with options for replacement.

“Possibly Rotary could look at taking on that project, or helping to fund that project,” he added. “They have their logo there.”
