ATHABASCA - Due to the weather, all Aspen View Public School buses are cancelled for Friday, Jan. 12, 2024. Schools will remain open for the day.
On Friday, temperatures are expected to dip as low as -45 C, with a high of -32 C.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued an extreme cold weather warning on Wednesday for all of Alberta, as there will be long periods of extremely cold temperatures.
Low temperatures of -35 C to -40 C are forecast for Thursday night, and temperatures will continue to fall through the weekend, according to Environment Canada.
Saturday morning and Sunday morning will be the coldest, with temperatures ranging from -40 C to -45 C, and wind chill values near -50 C.
Wind chill values could even be a bit colder in open and exposed areas, said a release from Environment Canada.
Patches of dense ice fog are possible near communities during the coldest mornings, possibly lasting until late morning.
"Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter," said the weather warning.
"Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes."
Temperatures are expected to warm up next week.
