Boyle RCMP are investigating a fatal single vehicle collision.

The collision occurred at 5 a.m. Aug. 9 on Township Road 634 just west of Highway 855.

“One person is dead and a second was flown to hospital via STARS following a single vehicle collision on the Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement,” Cpl. John Spaans said in a press release. “A white Dodge Journey carrying a number of occupants lost control on a gravel roadway and rolled over in the middle of road.”

Occupants of the vehicle fled the scene. However, they did alert a nearby homeowner to the critically injured female passenger still in the vehicle.

“Owners of the house attempted to assist the injured female and called 911,” Spaans said. “The 31-year-old female resident of Edmonton was pronounced dead upon arrival of emergency crews.”

There was a second injured person located five kilometres away at a residence.

“The 16-year-old male was suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries,” Spaans said. “He was flown to Edmonton via STARS Air Ambulance. He is currently in stable condition.”

The investigation is ongoing; however, alcohol is believed to have played a role in the collision.

Although not confirmed, Spaans said speed was also most likely a factor.

“An RCMP collision analyst has attended the scene, and investigators continue to speak with witnesses,” he said. “Investigators continue to piece together physical evidence and witness accounts to determine who was driving at the time of the collision and what factors led to this occurrence.”

Spaans said that so far the RCMP believe there were five occupants in the vehicle.

“None of the occupants of the vehicle are believed to have been wearing seatbelts,” he said. “The name of the deceased is not being released at this time pending notification of family.”
