Boyle School students got a taste of the cultures that live among them during Multicultural Day Oct. 18.

“Lots of times they forget there’s a bigger world out there. It’s nice to have it actually here so they can go and look and touch and they can experience … These are things we actually have here,” said Chelsey Wood, who is Grade 2 teacher and sat on the organizing committee for the day.

Booths displaying goods and objects from over seven cultures within Canada and globally formed a semi-circle in the school’s gymnasium as the cultural day kicked off with live entertainment. The Boyle Twilight Twirlers took to the stage first, showing students the art of square dancing.

Next, guest performers from Caslan School demonstrated jigging, the traditional dance of Métis people.

Wood said the school also tried to get a group of Pow Wow dancers to come out, but they could not make it.

After the live entertainment concluded, students meandered from booth to booth, tasting the fizzy Guarana Brazilia pop from Brazil, playing games traditional to First Nations people and eating pizzelles from France.

Cultures from Japan to Ukraine, Scotland and even Newfoundland were also on display.

“We tried to get all the groups that are actually in town so the kids that are here and don’t necessarily know all the cultures and experiences we have in town can see that, see what out town has to offer,” Wood said. “It was a pretty good turnout for our town.”
