ATHABASCA — The much-talked about mild weather in Alberta this winter will be taking a break this week, meaning Athabasca locals will have to get their mitts, toques, scarves and shovels ready — at least for a few days — as winter finally arrives.

According to the seven-day forecast from Environment Canada, temperatures are expected to drop as low as -36 C. Snow is also on the way, with a 30 per cent chance of flurries this evening and snow into the morning. Temperatures are expected to drop as low as -25 C overnight.

Between five to 10 centimetres of snow are expected on Tuesday, Jan. 9, with a high of -15 C during the day and a low of -26 C with wind chill from a 20 km/h northeastern gust.

Snow is expected stop by Wednesday, Jan. 10, but the colder temperatures will stick around, with a daytime high of -21 C and an overnight low of -30 C.

The rest of the week is forecasted to remain chilly, with temperatures as low as 30 below during the days and reaching lows around -36 C both Thursday and Friday nights.

According to The Weather Network’s 14-day forecast for the region, the cold snap is expected to loosen its grip marginally Jan. 15, with temperatures climbing back up to -18 C during the day. But by the end of the month, Alberta’s balmy winter may return — predictions for Monday, Jan. 22 are sitting as high as 0 C.
