Four county councillors acclaimed

Nominations for the Oct. 21 municipal elections were submitted by Athabasca County council hopefuls at the county office this morning.

All county councillors are seeking reelection with the exception of councillor Mike Demko, who announced his retirement from public office this summer.

County councillor Allen Balay is seeking reelection in Division 1 (Rochester/Perryvale area), up against Larry Speers, who served as county councillor in that division for two terms from 2004 to 2010.

Denis Willcott will attempt to keep his seat in Division 2 (Colinton area) from Frank Ponto, who is running against him.

In Division 3 (Boyle area), Doris Splane is seeking reelection, up against Wes Kowalchuk, who previously served on the Aspen View School Board.

For Division 4 (Southwest Athabasca area), Christine Bilsky is seeking reelection against Brian Bahry, who previously sat on county council from 2004 to 2010.

Kevin Haines was acclaimed as the returning councillor for Division 5 (East Athabasca), as was Jack Dowhaluk for Division 6 (Wandering River area).

In Division 7, current county Reeve David Yurdiga (councillor for Grassland area) is seeking reelection, but is up against Howard Hrynyk.

Larry Armfelt was acclaimed for Division 8 (Northwest, Baptiste/Island Lake area) and Warren Griffin was acclaimed for Division 9 (North of Athabasca River).
