Residents with their eyes to the skies may notice an increase in helicopter flyovers in the coming days as Alberta's largest electricity provider AltaLink begins its annual aerial inspections of transmission facilities across the province.

Helicopter patrols will begin Monday, May 26, and are expected to be complete by Friday, May 30. According to AltaLink, the inspections of transmission lines and surrounding vegetation help with the planning and deployment of proactive maintenance to maintain the reliability of the electrical grid.

Communities that may notice helicopter patrols include:

  • Athabasca County
  • Barrhead
  • Lac La Biche
  • Edmonton Region
  • Leduc
  • Devon
  • Camrose
  • Wetaskiwin
  • Ponoka
  • Flagstaff County
  • Wainwright
  • M.D of Provost

While helicopters may be visible during patrols, disruptions to neighbourhoods, people, livestock and wildlife should be minimal. Contact AltaLink at 1-877-267-1453 for any questions about the aerial inspections.
