Tonight, Larry Speers is returning to a job he knows well: that of county councillor for Division 1 (Rochester area).

Speers said he served two consecutive terms in the past but stepped back because he “never believed politicians should be in year after year after year; after term after term after term.”

Allen Balay held the seat most recently, and it was Balay who Speers defeated this evening by a margin of 66 votes. Speers had 208 ballots cast in his favour, while Balay had 142.

Speers believes his prior experience on county council will serve him well “because I’m very aware of our communities because I lived here most of my life, except for when I was away at university and taught at NAIT for six years.” He added he has also served the community through being a school principal and a coach.

“I’m grateful,” he said. “I would certainly like to say thank you to all of the people that helped me and voted for me, and my job now is to serve them, to represent them as best I can on county council.”
