Shots broke out at the Ottawa War Memorial, Parliament Hill and other locations near Wednesday morning and the local MP heard the shots.

Member of Parliament for Fort McMurray–Athabasca David Yurdiga was on Parliament Hill when the shooting occurred.

“We are in a secure location in Parliament,” Yurdiga stated in a Facebook message with the Athabasca Advocate. “I heard approximately 30 shots fired.”

Yurdiga confirmed he was safe.

“We are all safe and secure,” he said. “I'm very proud of our security team for keeping us safe, they are truly heroes.”

Parliament Hill is currently on lockdown and all phone calls into the building have been blocked.

The executive assistant for Yurdiga stated all staff members have been evacuated from the hill.

“We just have to let the officials and authorities take care and do their job,” Darryl Steves said. “Hopefully, no one else is hurt in the process.”

Steves confirmed Yurdiga was in a caucus meeting Wednesday morning.

“We are extraordinarily thankful for the security support on the hill and in existence,” Steves said. “We will do our best to keep people updated via Facebook when we have communication services restored.”
