New extreme cold warning issued by Environment Canada

Environment Canada has issued another extreme cold warning ahead of an overnight temperature dip to minus 40 in parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

ATHABASCA — Residents of Athabasca County are advised to hunker down for a while longer after Environment Canada issued another extreme cold warning for parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

On Jan. 17 at 3:30 p.m., an alert from Environment Canada announced extreme temperatures like those prevalent across the province Jan. 12 to 14 would be returning overnight. Advisories have been issued for 127 areas, including several in Athabasca County.

According to the alert, windchill values nearing -40°C will return tonight, creating elevated risk of health concerns such as frostbite and hypothermia. Risk of cold-related health issues are greater for young children, seniors, individuals with chronic illnesses, and anyone working outside or without proper shelter.
