The Northern Lights Spiritus Singers Society is inviting all singers to join the choir.
Each year, the choir performs many Christmas songs at the Nancy Appleby Theatre, and at each performance the theatre is packed.
This year, director Leah Meyer-Cook said it is a Celtic show called Season of Joy.
“The music all has a Celtic feel to it,” she said. “It uses instruments that are native to Ireland. It has a different sound, but it is still contemporary feeling.”
She stated the show recreates a Celtic Christmas evening, drawing on “some of the stories and folklore and how it all ties into the universal Christmas story.”
The concerts will take place at the Nancy Appleby Theatre Dec. 12–15.
The choir is looking for members, and Meyer-Cook said the number of singers allowed is limitless.
“We usually are somewhere between 90 and 102 people,” she said.
She also said the choir looks for all levels and ages of singers.
“Young and old, seasoned performers and first-timers — everyone is welcome,” she said. “If you have a love of music and an interest in being part of a really cool community group celebrating Christmas, you can join.”
The choir started 11 years ago, and Meyer-Cook said it stemmed from the entertaining she did in the past. She was a singer, performer and private music teacher in the Athabasca area.
“I used to get my students pulled together, and we would do little concerts here and there,” she said. “It grew out of that.”
If anyone is interested in joining the choir, they need to pick up music from Gerry Kiselyk. He can be reached at 780-675-0364.
“The music and resources cost $25,” Meyer-Cook said. “That is the overall fee for the group.”
Rehearsals start Sept.12 at the Missionary Church. They are every Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.
“This project is ultimately about gratitude, love and community service,” Meyer-Cook said. “It brings a great and diverse group of people together, and we get to fellowship and do something good for the community with the proceeds.”
Meyer-Cook explained that no matter why people join the choir, they will leave uplifted.
“Some people are drawn by the love of music; some people are drawn by the gospel message; and some people are just drawn for the social aspect of it,” she said.
