Power restored after unknown, unplanned outage affected Athabasca and surrounding areas

Cause of unplanned outage unknown

ATHABASCA — An unplanned power outage briefly hit the town of Athabasca, Athabasca County, as far north as Calling Lake this afternoon due to an unknown cause.

The outage began shortly after 12 p.m., and despite FortisAlberta estimates that service would be restored around 3 p.m., power was back on for local residences and businesses by 12:40 p.m.

Crews on scene indicated the outage was caused by an issue near the Esso gas station. Power to the gas station will remain off for a few hours this afternoon. 

The town of Athabasca, Colinton, South Baptiste, Island Lake, Calling Lake, Athabasca County and surrounding areas were affected by the outage.
