CALLING LAKE — An investigation into an incident that sparked an April 11 community lockdown in Calling Lake is underway, according to a release from the Athabasca RCMP.

Const. Kyle Hotchkiss wrote in an April 13 release that Athabasca officers responded to mid-afternoon reports of an armed and intoxicated man walking in a heavily populated area in Calling Lake April 11 — reports suggested he may have been headed to a number of buildings open to the public.

Officers arrived in the community and secured the Calling Lake School, which was on lockdown for approximately two hours. A systematic clearing of the area was conducted, and officers searched the community for the armed individual, who is known to police.

The male was located without a firearm around 5:30 p.m., and after officers deemed the area safe from immediate threat the lockdown of the school and community areas were lifted. Athabasca RCMP are not releasing the name of the accused at this time, and further updates will be provided to the public as the investigation continues.

Athabasca RCMP encourage the public to report any criminal or suspicious activity. Reports tell us where to look, who to look for, and where to patrol in the future.
