Rising to the challenge

The Edwin Parr Composite senior girls basketball team emerged victorious 45-35 on the road in Devon Jan. 10.

Team head coach Wade Hicks said communication and shot-taking were big reasons for the win.

“Nobody was nervous about shooting, and that made a huge difference for us,” Hicks said. “They talked really well in defense and actually communicated really well in offence as far as making the right cuts."

He added it was a good performance considering the number of players the team had sidelined for its Devon trip.

“We were really shorthanded against Devon. We had three of our regular girls out and only had 10 players there, so the girls played really well,” Hicks said.

The win put the girls at 6-6 on the season, according to Hicks. He said there has been a learning curve for the team as much of the group’s offence graduated last year.

“We’re a pretty young team,” Hicks said. “We graduated about 90 per cent of our offence from last year, so it’s kind of where I thought we’d be – a lot of girls trying to learn how to shoot the ball.”

The team followed the victory up with a challenging senior girls basketball tournament at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School in Spruce Grove Jan. 12-13. Hicks said the Edwin Parr Composite team was the only one going to the tournament that was not provincially ranked.

“We’re going to be in tough this week but it will be a good weekend for us,” Hicks said, adding the team regularly goes to this tournament.

Tournament results were not available before publish time.

With an even record in the season so far, Hicks said he wants his team to steadily improve as the playoffs approach. "We always say it’s a marathon, not a sprint. We don’t need to be playing our best basketball in January. We need to be playing our best basketball when we hit our end of February,” Hicks said. “Right now, it’s just trying to make sure we do little things well as a team. And as individual players, they continue to try and grow."
