Two candidates for the UCP leadership position will be at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex this week. (L) Travis Toews arrives Wed. for a 1 p.m. event and Rebecca Schulz appears at the same time on Thursday.

ATHABASCA — Whether you’re a United Conservative Party (UCP) member or not, you will have a chance to meet two of the seven leadership candidates who may end up being Premier of Alberta in local events.

Former minister of Finance and president of the Treasury Board, Travis Toews will be speaking at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex (ARM) Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. while former minister of Children’s Services Rebecca Schulz arrives for her event 1 p.m. Aug. 11 also at the ARM.

The other people running for the chance to replace current Premier Jason Kenney at the helm of the party are Leela Aheer who was the Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism, and Status of Women and Todd Loewen who was one of two MLAs removed from the UCP caucus for their criticism of how the government handled the COVID-19 response.

Rajan Sawhney also was forced to step away from being Minister of Transporation while running for leader and Brian Jean is entering back into politics after losing the first leadership race to Kenney. Rounding out the roster is former Wildrose Party leader Danielle Smith.

Sawhney is hosting an online town hall and none of the other candidates have announced if they are coming to the Athabasca area yet.

The leadership vote will take place Oct. 6.
