SWAN HILLS — Following an evacuation order for the Town of Swan Hills, patients at the Swan Hills Healthcare Centre were transported to facilities in the Edmonton Zone, according to Alberta Health Services (AHS).
Shortly after 1 p.m. on May 16, an evacuation order was issued for Swan Hills residents due to the proximity of a wildfire burning approximately 16 kilometres northwest of the community.
A reception centre was set up at the Barrhead Agrena and evacuees were urged to go there to register. Evacuees are now staying in trailers, hotels and local campgrounds, as well as Hillcrest Lodge.
A release sent out on May 16 confirmed that AHS and its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) partners were able to safely evacuate patients at the Swan Hills Healthcare Centre.
Needless to say, the facility will remain closed until the evacuation order is lifted. All appointments with laboratory services, diagnostic imaging, mental health and public health services in Swan Hills have been postponed.
The release states that clients will be contacted by AHS to be rescheduled as soon as possible.
According to the Town of Swan Hills website, there will be an update regarding the situation at 2 p.m. today, May 17.
