There has been an explosion of creativity at the Barrhead Public Library the past two weeks, with the return of the ever-popular SPARK camp.

The young artists have had the opportunity to delve into many styles of artistic expression, including drawing, photography, painting, block printing, and art journaling.

Popular among the groups has been the creation of paverpol bird sculptures. Each bird was carefully created, painted and decorated with feathers.

“They’re so cute,” said camp organizer Meg Dickie. “I think the birds were definitely a favourite.”

The camp has been fantastic this year, said Dickie. Last year the camp was offered for two weeks, and this year it has been bumped up to three to allow more art lovers to participate.

“Last year we had to turn down a few people who didn’t register quick enough,” said Dickie. “This year we’ve expanded it and the response is really good.”

The students have been quite enthusiastic about the projects, and eager to learn new techniques and skills.

“They’re really participating,” said Dickie. “Sometimes kids are a little reluctant to jump in, but these guys are having no problem with that.”

The group has been focusing on learning about colour theory and detail in art. However Dickie said she would like the group to experiment and try things they haven’t done before, and to feel they are free from the conventions of art.

“Often in more formal arts people feel they need to do what’s safe,” said Dickie. “I want them to go outside the box and try new things, and to feel safe doing that here. I don’t want art to be a chore, I want it to be fun.”
