Barrhead & District 4-H holds Achievement Day Show and Sale

Steers average $2.88 and market lambs $4.09 per pound at the 58th annual event held May 30

BARRHEAD – After two years of not being able to hold a show and sale, members and leaders of the four clubs that make up the Barrhead and District 4-H Beef and Sheep Show and Sale were keen to hold their annual event live once more in the Barrhead Ag Society Show Barn May 30. Four 4-H clubs competed at the 58th-annual event, including Camp Creek Multi, Meadowview Multi, Freedom-Naples, and T&M.

The excitement of being able to show their animals in competition before a judge and onlookers and compete directly with others again was obvious. This day was the result of their whole 4-H year of raising, feeding, caring for and training their animals for the show.

Seasoned veteran of 4-H as a former member, leader and a parent and now grandparent of 4-H members, Colleen Prefontaine of Legal (Bon Accord 4-H) was the beef judge, with Trinity Chadd judging the sheep classes. Both were also showmanship judge as well, and Lollly Chadd assisted with the sheep showmanship judging.

For her Grand Champion steer, judge Prefontaine selected the steer shown by Kirsten Strydhorst of the Freedom-Naples Multi 4-H Club. Her steer, Curly, started the club year at 862 pounds and finished at 1,665 pounds for an ADG of 3.68 pounds. At the evening sale, her 1,615-pound sale weight steer sold by Parsons Auctions for $2.95 per pound, a total of $4,764.25 to Perry Law of Barrhead.

The Reserve Grand Champion steer title was won by Emily Hodgetts of Camp Creek Multi 4-H. Her steer Gary started out the club year at 602 pounds and finished at 1,460 pounds for a 3.94 ADG. His sale weight was 1,416 pounds and was purchased by Fountain Tire of Barrhead for $2.80 per pound, a total of $3,964.80.

Judge Trinity Chadd selected Tyson King’s market lamb Rango for the Grand Champion market lamb. Tyson’s Jan. 3 lamb started his 4-H year at 56 pounds and finished at 116 pounds for a 0.94 ADG. VJV Auction in Westlock purchased him for $3.60 per pound for a total of $417.60.

There were 21 steers in this year’s sale, selling for $78,570.34 to average $3,741.44. The average price per pound was $2.88.

There were five market lambs in the sale, selling for a total of $1,704.15, an average of $426.04 per lamb and an average price of $4.09 per pound — price averages for both steers and lambs are unofficial.

Two meat rabbits were sold in the sale as well. the Grand Champion rabbit was shown by Vivian Mackenzie of T&M 4-H Multi. Her six-pound, 10-ounce rabbit was purchased by Parsons Auctions for $110. River Massa, also of the T&M club, was chosen Reserve Grand Champion. Her two-pound, 14-ounce rabbit went to Kampjes Rabbitry for $100.

There were many other Club and Reserve Champions for both market steers and market lambs, as well as in female classes.

See next week’s print edition for photos and information on more of the members who participated in this year’s show and sale.
