Barrhead Elementary leaps into Jump Rope for Heart event

Elementary students participate in fitness activities as part of the Jump Rope for Heart Event

Barrhead Elementary School students were ready to go May 17 for the Jump Rope for Heart event.

Students and staff were thankful the rain had held off so the event activities could be held outside as planned, even though the wind still had a cold bite.

Jump Rope for Heart is a worldwide heart and brain health program that has been motivating activities for school-age children for over 40 years.

The local event was divided into four different fun heart health activities held in and around the school.

The day started with Grade 5 and 6 students just after 9 a.m.

The group of students were divided into four groups to participate in four varied events. Each group was scheduled at a different event for the start time.

Hoppers and hula hoops was the first event with each of the four groups scheduled to complete their turn in a 10-minute time slot.

At the front sidewalk and playground of the school was the long ropes and playground event.

Short ropes for individuals, the third event, was hosted at the front of the library.

Located at the side basketball court and playground was the fourth event, Skippets/Hopscotch and side playground.

Participants were given a two-minute rest period between stations and to move to their next activity area.

The Grade 1 and 2 groups had their shot at the varied activities starting at 9:50 am.

With an 11:35 a.m. start, the Grade 4 and 5 participants excitedly waited their turn, ready to take on the challenges and get moving.

The school buzzed with excitement. The shrill voices, giggles and nervous laughs echoed from event to event.

Staff organizers kept everything running smoothly and the event occurred without major incident.

Through these events, fundraising for heart and stroke occurs, providing the benefits of research, advocacy, health promotions and kid’s education.
