A tradition celebrated by the German’s since 1810, and even though their festivities are known to run for weeks at a time, Barrhead celebrated it’s own version of this yearly celebration.
Oktoberfest was hosted at Barrhead Elementary School on Saturday, Oct. 18, and served a dinner that fit perfectly with the celebration.
Mashed potatoes, roast beef, perogies, and sausages, filled plates.
Following the dinner was the live auction, which sold items such as spa tickets, Edmonton Oilers tickets, a wagon, and many other items.
Auctioning the items was Barrhead auctioneer, Charlie Parsons.
Kerry VanHecke made an appearance on the stage during the auction, covered from head to toe in what appeared to be pool attire.
The items VanHecke was wearing included a floating tube, water wings, flippers, and more.
These items were also up for auction, including a small rubber duck, which was sold for $200.
All of the items auctioned were donated for the aquatic centre.
Throughout the evening, keys were available for purchase. For the price of $100, a key could be acquired that could open a box, which contained the winning ticket of $800 worth of beef.
The Gummow’s table held the key that won the beef.
The money raised through the event was to support the construction of the aquatic centre.
Sheldon Casavant filled the evening with a little magic, putting on a show shortly after the auction.
The first trick he performed used a piece of torn newspaper, which he then returned to its normal state.
Later in the evening Casavant performed magic tricks including mind reading, card tricks, and levitation.
The evening came to a close with a dance.
Oktoberfest was organized and brought to the area by the Barrhead Rotary Club, who uses the event to raise funds for ongoing projects.
