Pretty in pink

Smiles wide, eyes sparkling, hair the colour of a pink highlighter. Who wouldn’t want to cheer on Tabatha Sheehan and Joscelyn Liske in their quest for Hair Massacure funds? The girls began their campaign Jan. 23 for the infamous Edmonton event.

Despite their late start, the Grade 5 students have made leaps and bounds towards their fundraising goal of $1,000.

Last Friday, Sheehan and Liske had their blond locks dyed bright, bright pink at A Kut Above. The girls have a week with their vibrant new hair, before it is shaved off at the event in Edmonton Feb. 14.

This is Sheehan’s first time participating in the Hair Massacure. The youngster said she is looking forward to helping people, and has always wanted to try something like this.

Is she worried about having no hair? Perhaps a small part of her is, but she has a good grasp on the bigger picture.

“I do care about other people’s opinions, but this is my choice and I feel good about it,” she said. “Me and Josclyn, we are going to support each other.”

This year will be Liske’s second time participating, so she knows the drill. Her hair has grown back since she shaved in last Feb, but Liske doesn’t seem too worried about getting rid of it again.

“You don’t have to wash your hair or comb it in the morning,” she laughed. “It was fun last year and I liked doing it. It’s for a good cause.”

The girls were told how much they raised online, which totaled over $700. Needless to say, they were pleased when they received the news.

But the online amount was only the beginning. The girls received the big number while they were waiting for their hairdye to set.

With plastic on their heads and towels around their shoulders, Sheehan and Liske sat in their styling chairs and waited for the news.

The announcement came as a shock to the elementary school girls. Not only had they reached their goal of $1,000, they surpassed it. As of last Friday, the determined duo raised $1,901.80.

The girls had numerous donations from the local community. Tabitha’s mother Tara Kloeck, hair stylist at A Kut Above, said the salon contributed $640 of tips from customers to the girls. Rocky Mountain Equipment New Holland in Barrhead, as well as Servus Credit Union, were also supportive.

To donate to Sheehan and Liske, visit www.hairmassacure.com, select Northern Alberta, “I want to donate,” and pledge a participant. The girls’ team name is TABALYN.
