Those sirens you heard coming from the fire hall last Wednesday night weren’t because the fire department was rushing off to a call — they were because the department’s new command/rescue vehicle had arrived.

Emergency services personnel and search and rescue teams continue to search the Pembina River in eastern Barrhead County in hopes of finding a second man who was swept away by the river on Sept. 27.

Doug Horner brushed aside his election disappointment to give full backing to Alberta’s first-ever female premier, Alison Redford. “I see myself as a soldier on the battlefield and I have a new commanding officer,” he said.

Anti-abortion campaigners lined Barrhead streets on Saturday to give motorists more to think about than traffic signs.

Barrhead nurses told Health Minister Gene Zwozdesky they are suffering from “burnout” and need extra staff. They also complained about the amount of paperwork they have to deal with and the quality of food served to patients.

Residents of the Brookside Village complex in Barrhead are still waiting for the town to come around and fix the cracked and sinking roadway.
