Local fire crews had their work cut out for them during last week’s deep freeze after a blaze gutted a garage north of Pickardville Jan. 11. The Westlock County Fire Department was alerted to the call at 5:37 p.m. on Wednesday.

A Westlock resident recently completed a 2,650 mile hike following an inland trail along the west coast that stretches from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. Julie Bourque has called Westlock home for most of her life, attending St.

They say that a good deed is its own reward, but for Kay Nestorovich her decades and decades of volunteering are coming back to thank her in spades. “I still volunteer a little bit,” she said.

It turns out Santa really likes Barrhead. For at least the fifth time in the last three weeks Santa Claus was spotted in Barrhead, this time it was the Agrena on Sunday, Dec. 19. After starting the tradition nearly a decade ago, this Christmas nearly marked the first time that Robert Boychuk decided not to put up his family’s massive Christmas display at their property just west of Clyde along Highway 18.

The streets of Westlock will be a little brighter next year.

Thorhild County has declared a state of agricultural disaster. Council made the unanimous decision Dec. 13 as a result of excessive moisture conditions in the summer and fall causing agricultural hardship on its producers.
