Newbrook - A rollover caused by a ruptured tire on a fuel tanker truck on Highway 63 Aug. 21, has claimed the life of a Boyle man.

Redwater RCMP, fire services and emergency medical services responded to a 911 call at around 1:30 p.m. that reported a single-vehicle accident involving a fuel tanker rolling into a ditch had occurred about three kilometres north of the hamlet of Newbrook in Thorhild County, about 36 km southwest of Boyle.

According to an RCMP release received that evening, "preliminary investigation indicates a fuel tanker truck was heading northbound on Highway 63 approximately one kilometre south of Township Road 622 where it appears a tire blew on the truck, causing it to lose control and rollover, coming to rest on its hood in the west ditch."

The 28-year-old Boyle man was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was the only occupant in the truck at the time.

Highway 63, which provides access to Fort McMurray, is known as a notoriously dangerous highway in Alberta with the amount of heavy and regular traffic heading into and out of Fort McMurray and the Athabasca oil sands.

Redwater RCMP continue to investigate the incident, but do not expect to provide any further updates.

The name of the deceased will also not be released.
