A fire just south of Pickardville Nov. 25 claimed a holiday trailer that was home to Allan Tribe (right) and Lillian Sound (centre). While neither was injured, the blaze consumed the trailer and its contents. Since the Pickardville Community League, headed by Dennis Ryan (left), has stepped up to help the family get back on their feet via a donation drive.

WESTLOCK – Lillian Sound and Allan Tribe lost everything they owned in a trailer fire Nov. 25 but the community, headed by the Pickardville Community League, has stepped up to get the family back on their feet.

The Friday following the fire, the league put together a donation drive where members of the community could drop off clothes, housing supplies and money. Several businesses from the area also donated gift cards and one man donated $300.

“The response has been really overwhelming,” said league president Dennis Ryan. “Local businesses around Westlock have really helped and I’m still getting texts to my phone.”

Ryan, who was elected to the position in late July, says he is impressed with the amount of donations received, although more are needed to get the family back on their feet. The family is still in need of items like kitchenware and bedding.

Having raised just around $900 in under a week, Ryan says there is still a way to go to reach their $3,000 goal that will help cover the costs of moving, damage deposits and the purchase of clothes and other essentials not received through donations.

“The community really comes together in difficult times like this, each and every time,” added Ryan.

Ryan, who is a member of the Iron Order motorcycle club, says the club will also be holding a fundraiser during its annual Christmas party Dec. 4.

Donations can still be made, and e-transfers can be sent to [email protected] with the password ‘kindness.’ Item donations can also be made by contacting Ryan at 587-988-7434.

The family's dog Buddy, an eight-month-old border collie, is currently being housed at Paws Inn and is in search of a new home.
