Jarvie store burns down

The building also housed the community post office

JARVIE – The Jarvie General Store burned down earlier this morning, including the post office.

Westlock County firefighters from Jarvie, Fawcett, Pickardville and Clyde responded to an early morning call in the area.

The fire started toward the front end of the store. Residents say they heard a small explosion after the building caught on fire.

A fuel dispensing tank was also on the site, south of the store, but it was still standing by the time firefighters extinguished the fire.

No injuries have been reported.

An Alberta fire inspector was also on scene in the afternoon, when firefighters were clearing the area.

Although parts of the building had been added over time, the original structure has been there since the 1920s.

This used to be the brown bear at the entrance of the store. The brown bear that used to sit at the entrance of the store was also a casualty in the early morning fire.
