BOYLE - Upcoming work on two of Boyle’s busiest streets took one step closer to getting under way last week as village council accepted three requests for proposal for sidewalk and water main replacement along 4 St., along with a pavement overlay.

After discussing recommendations from project manager Sterling Johnson in May and putting out a call for requests for proposal (RFP), council was ready to entertain the offers that were received and pick a company to complete the work.

Councillors did so in-camera, but passed three motions afterwards to make it official.

Diogo Concrete, out of Edmonton, was awarded the sidewalk work with its bid of $59,212; Nikiforuk Construction, also from Edmonton, will take care of the water and storm sewer work after bidding $196,415 for that project; and Border Paving, from Stony Plain, will complete the overlay work after bidding $67,401.

Interim CAO Robert Jorgenson said after the meeting that each of the three projects had three bidders and in each case council went with the lowest bid. He also clarified the decisions made refer only to the work planned on 4 St. Additional RFPs for the work planned for 3 St. are still pending and will be reviewed by council at its June 17 meeting.

Funding for the projects will be covered by roughly $1.3 million in Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) grants.

“This is a big project for a small village, but we have the money set aside, we’ve been holding off on our MSI for a few years. We have the money there,” said Jorgenson.

He added that the current state of the economy probably helped out as far as the amount of interest the village has seen for the RFPs and the dollar figures of the quotes received.

The work on 4 St. will include the replacement of segments of the west sidewalk; the installation of a fire hydrant and a new valve at the south end of the street to isolate the street if the water needs to be shut off; and the replacement of the para-ramps at both ends of the street. Fresh pavement will also be laid down to complete the work.

The village’s main street, 3 St., will also see some similar work this summer, with sidewalks on both sides of the street being replaced and a new overlay of pavement as well
