BARRHEAD – The PowerSchool system used by school divisions through the province has been breached, but the local school divisions have come out unschathed.
Both Pembina Hills School Division and Aspen View Public Schools data were not compromised when the data breach occurred by hackers. Data is safe as of right now.
“We're not one of the ones that have been affected,” stated Brett Cooper, superintendent of the Pembina Hills School Division.
“We are obviously monitoring it very closely.”
Data from families in the Aspen View Public School division was also not compromised during the province-wide breach, said Ross Hunter, spokesperson for the school division.
Cooper said they have communicated to the staff to be mindful and watch for anything malicious or phishing-type emails.
Phishing emails are sent in attempts to get access to passwords, personal identification information or credit cards.
They appear to be from a reputable source and often contain a link that will give the hacker access to information or systems used.
“Pembina Hills is safe for now. We will communicate out as soon as we are aware of any sort of data breach,” said Cooper.
A data breach is when hackers have gained access to a protected system and gain data and confidential information on that system.
