The St. Mary girls Sharks basketball team will take its results at the Hay Lake Invitational tournament Feb. 18-19 as a learning experience. “We had definitely a schizophrenic kind of performance,” said coach Peter Molesky.

In the Zone 2 bantam finals, the Boyle Blazers have quickly established their dominance. The Blazers welcomed the Smoky Lake Stars to the Millview Recreation Complex on Friday night for game one of the two-game, total points series.

Keegan Kanzig isn’t coming home from Halifax empty handed. As a member of Team Alberta at the Canada Winter Games in Nova Scotia, the Athabasca native won a bronze medal.

Since the fall of 2007, Tyler Chapman has been working towards his goal of participating in the Special Olympics. Chapman is a speed skater. He participated in the Special Olympics Winter Games in and around Edmonton, including Leduc Feb. 11-13.

The Barrhead Flyers are Zone 3 champions. On Feb. 17, the Wabamun Wildcats paid a visit to the Barrhead Agrena for Game 2 of their provincial playdown series against the Flyers. The Flyers took Game 1 in Wabamun, 4-3.

As the peewee ‘B’ playoffs approach, the Barrhead Eagles are gearing up to make a run at the league championship. On Feb. 10, the Whitecourt Vipers pulled into town for a makeup game that was a rehearsal for Round 1 of the playoffs.

The Barrhead ‘AA’ Midget Steelers lost 3-2 in Game 2 of their provincial playdowns on Feb. 9 against the St. Alberta Crusaders, but quickly got over the loss in time for their game against the Morinville Warriors on Feb. 11.

Fun, friendship and fundraising were the hallmarks of the Oilmens Bonspiel last weekend. The event was held at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex beginning last Friday, continuing on Saturday and finishing up with the championship games on Sunday.

The Athabasca Aces played their last game of the season on Saturday, but it was a memorable one.
