The Boyle Blazers bantam hockey team is ready for a challenge. Which is good, considering where they’re headed. The bantam boys are on their way to Coronation this weekend for the provincial championships.

The atmosphere was electric at the Alberta Cheerleading Association’s annual Total Spirit Championships on the weekend. Four local cheer squads were in the city to take part in the event, which was held at the West Edmonton Mall.

It’s when championships are on the line that the great teams separate themselves from the good teams.

It was a fantastic weekend for the two R.F. Staples junior high basketball teams at their divisional tournament in Barrhead March 4-5.

Some players who get their start in high school sports go on to bigger and better things, and one Westlock athlete has truly shined.

The Edwin Parr Composite senior high cheerleaders were on top of their game at the provincial championships last weekend. Their reward was a third-place finish and bronze medals for everyone.

Local basketball courts were busy last week as schools in Athabasca and Boyle hosted regional competitions. Last Thursday, Edwin Parr Composite hosted the boys ‘A’ event while Landing Trail Intermediate School was the site of the boys ‘B’ event.

A call up to the Barrhead Blackhawks made a big impression on the coaching staff. Jordan Adams of the Barr-head Angelz suited up for the Blackhawks on the weekend, but despite a strong effort from Adams, the Blackhawks dropped both games.

Two teams from Barrhead won medals in the curling event at the 55-plus Winter Games held in St. Albert Feb. 24-27. Both team participated in the 65-plus curling event.

The Barrhead Steelers gave it all they had, but came up short in the end. In Game 1, the third-place Steelers got outworked and outbattled, resulting in a 2-1 defeat to the second-place PAC Spruce Grove Saints. On Feb.
