Agnes Bergen

Agnes Bergen, of Sangudo, Alberta, beloved wife of the late Cornelius Bergen, passed away peacefully at the Tofield Long Term Care Facility on September 10, 2022, at the age of 96.

Agnes was born on June 26, 1926, in Milden, Saskatchewan. She was the oldest child in a family of nine. She married Cornelius Bergen in Rosemary, Alberta on October 28, 1944, where they resided until their move to Sangudo in 1964.

Agnes lived in the Sangudo area for 46 years. She was well known for her home cooked meals and baking at Aggie’s Café and her strong commitment to community service. She fell in love with acreage living, raising and butchering over 300 chickens per year and providing her family with fresh vegetables from a very productive garden for many years. She travelled frequently with friends and family, which allowed her to see places such as England, Scotland, Ireland, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Las Vegas, Bermuda and others along with many Canadian excursions to see family.

This strong woman has created a long line of children and grandchildren who cook, bake, garden, quilt, and knit, all with an “I can do” work ethic. Her legacy includes 21 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.

Community service was important to Agnes, so it was not uncommon for her to provide service and support to many friends, the elderly and various halls in the area including Peavine Lake Romeo Hall where she was a member for many years. Her perogies were highly regarded and her salsa was award-winning in Sangudo and Tofield and definitely amongst her grandchildren.

Agnes is pre-deceased by her husband Cornelius Bergen in 1991, sons Leonard and Everett Bergen in 1952, granddaughter Shauna Pearce in 1974, great-grandson Noah Pearce in 2001, son-in-law David Carstairs in 2018 and grandson-in-law Gregory Thompson in 2022 as well as various extended family members.

Agnes is survived by her sons, Ronald (Elspeth) Bergen and family, Leslie (Debbie) Bergen and family; and her daughters, Evelyn (Glen) Pearce and family, Bette (Robert) Landry and family, Rita (Dennis) Thorburn and family, Ruth (Peter) Robins and family, Linda Carstairs and family, Beverly (Edwin) Ducharme and family, Leanne (Darcy) Tilley and family; her sister Helen Rempel, and her brother David (Yvonne) Krause.

Funeral Service will be held at 1 PM on Friday September 16, 2022 from Sangudo United Church with Pastor Roger Manuel officiating.
