Alexander Brodyk

February 26, 1934 – July 11, 2023

On July 11, 2023, Alexander Brodyk of Hondo, Alberta passed away at the age of 89 while in care in Camrose, Alberta.

Alex will be remembered by his wife, Josephine, daughters Bonnie (Brad), Lainie (Jerry), sons Dale (Tanya) and Jordan, 8 grandchildren Dillon (Kyley), Launa (Jason), Nicole (Jorden), Hanson (Taylor) and Slater (Janessa), Madisen, Brinley and Chance and 3 great-grandchildren Treyson, Kinglsey and Sophie as well his sister-in-law Jeannette and her family.

Alex was born in Smoky Lake, Alberta on February 26, 1934 and lived in a 2 room log home with his parents and 3 siblings. He decided to move to Edmonton in the 50’s where he began his career as a meat cutter with Canada Packers. Alex remained with Canada Packers for almost 40 years until they closed in 1984, he then transferred to ShurGain and mixed animal feeds for 5 years until his retirement at 55 when he went to live on the farm in Hondo full-time. While at Canada Packers he enjoyed passing his meat cutting knowledge down to others by teaching students at NAIT and training newly hired employees at Canada Packers.

Farming was his true passion and when he had the opportunity to live on the farm full time, he was happiest. He built his home in 1978 where he lived until 2016. He married his wife, Josie, in August of 1999 and they were very happy on Brodyk Acres. He loved his wife, his family, his pets and livestock and while his true dream was to be self-sufficient, we don’t believe he could have ever eaten anything he raised, so the grocery stores were his friend. He had a green thumb and took great pride in his yard and garden, both pristinely kept and the envy of many. He was in great physical condition because he hand fed cattle into his 80’s and hand picked thousands of hay and straw bales over the many years.

He had a stroke in December 2016 that led to dementia and mobility issues meaning he could no longer live at home so he spent the last 6.5 years of his life in care, most of those (over 6) in Rosehaven in Camrose. We are so grateful for the compassion and caliber of care shown to Alex by the Rosehaven staff and volunteers, their care, support and commitment to their patients will always be remembered.

Alex was predeceased by his parents John and Mary, his sisters Lillian and Cecile and his brother Russell.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Westlock Funeral Home, 10004-105 Street, Westlock, Alberta.

In lieu of flowers and celebrating what Alex loved, donations to SCARSCARE, PO Box 3045 Athabasca AB T9S 2B9, https://www.scarscare.ca/donate/ or to The Zebra Centre, 7th Floor, 10909 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, AB T5J 3L9 https://www.zebracentre.ca/donate would be greatly appreciated.
