Remembering Mary ...

Mary will be remembered for being a friendly, outgoing person who enjoyed the company of her family and friends.

On February 25, 1934, Mary was born in Athabasca, Alberta, Canada. Her parents were Anton and Antonina Sorokoski, who raised their family of seven children on a farm 12 miles outside of the township. Her siblings were Mike, Lena, Roy, Helen, Julie, and John.

At a town dance, in Athabasca, Mary was introduced to Mike Butler. For several consecutive weekends Mike would show up at the weekend dances that Mary was attending. And as the night wore on, he would use a touch of friendly persuasion to eliminate the competition for her attention. His methods proven effective for Mike and Mary were married October 18, 1958.

During the busy years that followed, Mary balanced being a loving and nurturing mother to her four children: Susan, Christopher, David and Evered, while working at the town branch of CIBC.

Mary was also regularly active in the community, her local parish, and she especially loved playing in the Ladies’ League of the Athabasca Curling Club.

One of Mom’s outstanding qualities was her hospitality. Whenever one would drop in for a visit, she would treat them to a tasty bite to eat, a hot pot of coffee and sweets were always at the ready. Her grandchildren looked forward to seeing what grandma had stashed for them to munch on while visiting. On many special occasions, Mary’s home was filled with family feasting on yummy traditional meals she would prepare. Pot roast, Yorkshire Pudding, gravy, pirogues, cabbage rolls, baked ham, all accompanied by vegetable dishes. The crowning glory of these feasts were the desserts: luxurious plum puddings drizzled with brandy sauce, tarts (mincemeat, butter pecan and cherry), pies (apple, cherry, saskatoon, and blueberry), and her renowned Pineapple delight. She was a very willing teacher over the years and have passed along many of her recipes to the next generation.

Mary is predeceased by her loving husband Mike, her son David, her parents, Anton and Antonina and her brother Roy.

Mary is survived by:
