Marjory Annas Dawson

We are saddened to announce the passing of Marjory Dawson on March 13, 2021, at the age of 93.

Marjory was predeceased by Rex, her husband of 71 years, who passed away October 12, 2020. She is survived by one sister, Alice McKay, of Didsbury;
four daughters: Koreen (Jim) Sawatsky, Jane (Eric) Cameron, Kathy (Don) Gerig, and Liana; seven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

The seventh born of eight children, Marjory was the first child born in Canada after her family immigrated to Canada from Scotland. The family settled on a farm east of Didsbury, where she grew up. Marjory attended the University of Calgary to become a teacher and subsequently taught in, New Bergthal, Sundre, and Carstairs. Her love of teaching and learning remained with her throughout her life.

After Marj’s marriage to Rex, she stayed busy at home, with the family. The family moved from Didsbury, to Red Deer, to Edmonton, and eventually to Westlock. When Marj did resume her teaching career, it was to substitute teach in Edmonton. After Rex opened the Ford dealership in Westlock, she resumed her teaching career again full time until her retirement.

Raised on a farm, Marj always had a vegetable garden and appreciated the bounty a garden provided. The freezer and cupboards were always full. Visitors and friends were always welcomed with homemade food and treats. Endless hours were spent creating and nurturing flower beds. She always saw the beauty in nature, and could easily see more than the weeds. She enjoyed her “chores” on the acreage, tending to peacocks, doves, and ducks.

Involvement in the Merry Makers singing group, Garden Club, Art Club, and Drama productions, were a reflection of her interests and if that wasn’t enough, she also found time to knit, crochet, and petit point. Marj was always up for fun, and treasured the lifelong friendships she made. Throughout the years, she travelled around the world with Rex.

As the family grew, Marj loved to celebrate birthdays, graduations, and weddings. She never forgot a birthday and would always phone to give a “tune up” (the Happy Birthday song) performed on her beloved Harmonica.

The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude and appreciation for the exceptional and kind medical care and attention provided by Dr. M. Benard and the staff at Westlock Healthcare Centre. As well, the family thanks friends that supported Marj through their kind notes and phone calls.

Due to Covid -19 restrictions, a service for immediate family will be held Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 1:00 pm at the Westlock Funeral Chapel.
