JONK, Dennis Michael

November 12, 1963 – March 12, 2023

It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the sudden passing of our beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, Dennis Michael Jonk of Calgary, Alberta on March 12, 2023, at the age of 59 years. Dennis touched so many lives and will be remembered for his generosity, keen mind, open smile, and adventurous spirit.

He is survived by his mother Minnie Jonk; his siblings, Margaret Ruhl, Nick Jonk (Renée), Marian Stocking (Arlen), Henry Jonk (Cheryl), Peter Jonk (Susan), Irene Benson (Charles), Yvonne Jonk (Todd Esler), Mina Jonk, and Leroy Jonk. His 11 nieces, 13 nephews, 10 great-nephews, and 9 great-nieces will dearly miss their fun-loving Uncle Dennis. He was predeceased by his father Henry Jonk, niece Leah Jonk, and brother-in-law Jeffrey Ruhl.

Dennis was born in Stony Plain and moved with his family to Westlock in 1971. He graduated from St. Mary School in 1981. Post-secondary schooling took him to Edmonton, where he completed Civil Engineering at NAIT. Further studies at the University of Alberta earned him a degree in Agriculture with a major in Business. Throughout this time Dennis also worked on the family farm. Opportunities eventually led Dennis to Calgary, where he settled and built a successful oil and gas engineering career. Yet, Westlock and his family were always ‘home’ and close to his heart. Dennis worked hard but always made time for his many friends and big family. He loved to travel, golf, fish, ski, or lend a hand with any project – his big helping hands were only surpassed by his huge heart. Dennis’ Calgary home was open to anyone who needed a place to stay, and all were welcome. He was happiest outdoors in nature, whether on a boat, on a trail, swimming, or socializing around a campfire with a drink in his hand. Dennis made a lasting imprint on so many people’s lives and will be sadly missed.

A Prayer Service took place at 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, March 19, 2023 at Westlock Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was held at 1:00 p.m., on Monday, March 20, 2023 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with a private interment at the Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made in Dennis’ name to the Canadian Mental Health Association – Alberta Division (Alberta.CMHA.ca) or a charity of your choice.
