LYONS, Dorothy Annie

It is with equal parts of joy and sorrow that we share this news…In the morning hours of Sunday, August 14, 2022, Dorothy Annie (Letts) Lyons, our beloved mother, went to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

During a 1928 September snowstorm in Pibroch, Mom was born to two of our favourite pioneers in the Westlock area, Grandpa Nelson and Grandma Agnes Letts. Mom was the only sister to an older brother, the late Dr. Jim Letts, and two younger brothers Mr. Alex Letts of St. Albert, and Mr. Park Letts of Westlock.

After graduating from Westlock High School, Mom took the war emergency teacher training course at the University of Alberta. Miss Letts was known by many in the surrounding community as the teacher who started them on their academic career.

Following marriage in another Alberta snowstorm, this time in December of 1948 (as Mom chuckling told the snowstorm story, “well it was 40 below, so close enough), Mom and Dad farmed side by side in the Westlock area. In a speech at their 60th wedding anniversary Mom said, “We have an outstanding town, and are proud to say we live at Westlock.”

Be it any activity from farming duties, to attending Sunday morning church, to travelling the world, in their 71 years together you would rarely find one without the other. To quote Mom again, “we had a great time.”

Mom had five children Judy (George) Bennett; Dr.Virginia Lyons (Dr.John) Friesen; Margaret Anne (Jay) Gurnett; Harold (Sharon) Lyons; Norma (Gary) Calderwood. She was grandmother and great-grandmother to quite a clan for which we lose count every time we try! Members of that group frequently enjoyed many a visit, sleepover, and wiener roast at “the farm.”

Mom was predeceased by her parents; loving husband Albert (March 2020); granddaughter Allison Lyons; brother Jim Letts; in-laws Albert (Bert) and Christina Lyons; brother-in-law Mac Cameron; and sister-in-law Margaret Fraser Blatchford and Bud Fraser and Harold Blatchford; and special niece Laura Letts.

Left to mourn are we five children and our spouses, children and grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law Mr. Alex and Mrs. Peggy Letts, and Mr. Park and Mrs. Beth Letts; sisters-in-law Mrs. Jean Cameron and Mrs. Caroline Letts; and the extended group comprised of their children and families.

One of Dad’s favourite songs by Jim Reeves, which we children remember often playing on the living room record player in the evenings, was God Be With You…

God be with you ‘til we meet again
By His counsels guide, uphold you
With His sheep securely fold you
God be with you‘til we meet again.

…we are comforted that Dad and Mom are together again.

In honour of Mom and following her request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to...
