Margaret “Peggy” Alice Mitchell

January 4, 1943 – July 1, 2021

It is with the heaviest of hearts that the family of Peggy Mitchell of Whitecourt announces her passing on July 1, 2021, at the age of 78 years, in her home. Insistently taking care of and feeding people was Peggy’s greatest joy and strength. Whether it was baking up a storm for her family and friends or working as the lunch lady at the Alberta Correspondence School in Barrhead, Alberta, there was never a doubt she was the best woman for the job. Her cinnamon buns were legendary in both size and taste, and everyone knew it! Her caring and nurturing nature was just who she was. She often told stories about working with small children at a daycare and was so proud that she could feed four babies all at once, loving every second of it. Peggy’s great-grandchildren never had to ask as she always had cookies waiting for them when they visited. Many would also remember her as an all-star baker when it came to her bread and pies at the local Farmers Market. The life of the party, she was not only a gracious attentive hostess but also the first on the dance floor and the last to leave. Peggy’s independence and determination was to be admired. Her tight hugs and audacity were who she was, all rolled into one big giant ball of love, pancake batter and stubbornness. Loved by many, her huge heart and generous affection will be missed and always cherished.

She will be greatly missed by her close companion Enos Denney; children Glen (Joanne) Mitchell, Kim (Tim) Messmer and Deb (Clayton) Brandvold; grandchildren David (Nadia) Mitchell, Robyn (Sean) Lepine, Melissa (Jeff) Messmer, Sheena (Ben) Pike and Savannah (Nick) Vanderveen; great-grandchildren Colton, Brooklynn, Alora, Abby, William, and Emma as well as siblings Pat (Ernie) Stephani and Dennis (Linda) Kerr.

She is predeceased by her parents Walter Kerr and Nellie McCauley, stepfather Gordon McCauley; brother Jim Kerr and grandson Brandon Messmer.

As per Peggy’s wishes she will be cremated and a celebration of life for family and close friends will be held in Whitecourt, Alberta; date to be determined. If desired, memorial contributions may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, or a charity of choice.
