Smela, Joseph (Joe)

On March 17, 2021 Joe Smela of Westlock, formerly of Dapp, passed away at the age of 93 years. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Frank, and Josephine, and his first wife of 52 years, Janina “Jean”, sisters Mary, Vickie, and brother Stanley. He is survived by his second wife Catherine, his daughter Rita (John) of Westlock; 2 grandchildren; Robin (Krista); Nancy (Conrad); 2 great grandchildren Dylan and Evan; 5 sisters; Helen (Morrie), Jean, Kathy (Darrell), Rosanne, Stacey (Ken), and 1 brother; Emil (Sofia); and children of his second wife, Cheryl, Kyle, Sheldon, Robyn, Shelley, and Tracey, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Joe was born in Poland in 1927 and came to Canada with his family in 1928. Joe farmed west of Dapp in the Cedar Creek area for many years. Next to farming Joe’s greatest joy was camping, fishing, and hunting.
Thank you to the doctors and staff of the Westlock Continuing Care Centre for the excellent care and support shown to Joe and his family.
Due to the restrictions and safety measures associated with the current Covid-19 pandemic there will be no formal service. Cremation has taken place and a small family graveside ceremony will be held later, with interment in the Westlock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully accepts donations to Westlock Continuing Care or the charity of one’s choice.
