DARLENE STEIDEL-CHAPMAN

JANUARY 13, 1957 – OCTOBER 7, 2022

Our hearts are broken as we announce the passing of Darlene Steidel-Chapman of Alberta Beach, Alberta. Darlene passed peacefully in Barrhead Healthcare Centre Hospital at the age of 65, surrounded by family and friends. She fought a painful battle with cancer but chose to end treatment and to take control over her remaining days. She was a warrior and had such amazing spirit and joy even knowing her time was near.

Darlene was born and raised in Barrhead, Alberta. She graduated high school in 1975 and went to work in Edmonton. She married Mark Steidel in 1977 and lived in Swan Hills, Alberta. They made their home there with their two sons until they moved to Edson in 1992. In December, 1995 Mark suffered a major heart attack and passed. In 2008 she married Mike Chapman, later divorcing him in 2013. She moved to Alberta Beach where she made her home until her passing.

Darlene never had a lot of money or assets, but she had a wealth of friends. This became evident with the help she received from them at her home, and with the numerous visitors at the hospital.

Darlene will forever be lovingly remembered by her sons Allan Steidel and Jordan (Sara McKay) Steidel, siblings Violet Brade, Gus Gerth, Linda (Paul) Lavoie, Esther (Chris) Kennedy-Mattson, nieces and nephews, extended family and many special friends, and her cat, Gizmo.

Darlene is predeceased by husband Mark Steidel, and parents Gustav and Elizabeth Gerth, and sister Rose Thompson.

We would like to say our special thanks to Dr. Tawfik and Dr. Bernes, the nurses and support staff of the Barrhead Healthcare Centre for the compassion and care Darlene received, and to all the family and friends that visited her or reached out to her these last days. We are forever grateful.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, it was Darlene’s wish that donations be made to Compassion House Foundation
