Mark D. Tims, KC

1953-2022

With the greatest regret, we record the peaceful passing of Mark D. Tims, KC on October 6, 2022, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Mark is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis Tims (née Froehlich), who was unconditionally his life partner and soulmate over 37 years of marriage, and 46 years together. Mark is also survived by three brothers and three brothers-in-law, together with their spouses/partners: Michael and Renae Tims of Calgary; David and Kathy Tims of Calgary; Richard Tims and David Jenks of Vancouver; Merv and Rosa Froehlich of Charlottetown; Don and Lenore Froehlich of St. Gregor, SK; and Gordon and Maureen Froehlich of Moose Jaw.

Mark greatly loved his many nieces and nephews, now 18 in total, together with their spouses. They were a constant source of joy and fascination for him. Mark was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Marion Tims, and one brother, Grant R. Tims.

Mark held three university degrees: a B.A. in Political Science; an MBA; and his law degree, the latter from the University of Alberta. He was very honoured to be named a Queen’s Counsel in 2006, recently renamed a King’s Counsel in 2022. This recognition was a fitting reflection of: Mark’s legal skills; his consummate professionalism; and, most importantly, his extraordinary contributions to his profession, his community and public life.

Mark wanted to become a lawyer from the time that he was a young boy. Mark loved the law --- its traditions, practices, and impact. Very importantly, starting from his earliest days in practice, Mark always saw the law as a way to serve and help others. In addition, he absolutely loved helping younger lawyers to start out, and much enjoyed mentoring them extensively. In fact, probably the most noteworthy characteristic of Mark’s purpose-filled and accomplished life is that he did so much for others, and not for himself.

After initially practicing elsewhere in Alberta, Mark founded the law firm, initially known as Tims & Company, in 1984. That law firm, with the addition of a number of exceptional people, is now known as Properzi Tims, in Westlock, AB.

Among several other areas of the law, Mark was a respected authority on correctional services, and he served in a significant number of important adjudications, investigations, and committees in this domain. He also previously served as Chairman of the Student Finance Board of Alberta and as a long-time public member of the council of the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta and its predecessor organization.

Mark will be profoundly missed by his wife, Phyllis; his entire family; his partners and colleagues at Properzi Tims; his many friends and clients; and the countless people whom he helped and impacted in his very full life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 21, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at the Westlock & District Community Hall: 10711 - 104 Avenue, Westlock, Alberta T7P 2E6.

In lieu of flowers, for those so inclined, memorial donations may be made to the: STARS Foundation (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service Foundation) Website: https://stars.ca/.
