In less than a month, we will cast our vote for the next mayor of Barrhead, as well as for those running for the few remaining councillor positions not filled through acclaimation. This will be my first municipal election as a resident and reporter.

My name is Daniel Todd, but you can call me Dan. I moved to Athabasca from Brampton, Ont., which is about 45 minutes outside of Toronto, if you are unfamiliar with the area. The drive to get here took three and a half days.

Despite the low-hanging fruit brushing the ears of Town of Athabasca councillors, none took a bite.

The town and the county are on the verge of a brand new regional fire services agreement. At its Sept. 11 meeting, town council voted approval of the 12-page document and county councillors are expected to ratify it at their own meeting on Sept. 19.

It looks like congratulations will soon be in order for the town and county on coming to a fire services agreement. Barrhead town councillors approved their part of the agreement on Sept.

Dear Editor, The other day [April] we heard on the news that the pro-life society is not going to be making a presentation at the Red Deer Catholic School.

This past Sunday residents took to the streets to commemorate one of Canada’s greatest heroes. The community’s annual Terry Fox Run brought in 12 runners, a dog and $677 for the campaign.

The second annual Athabasca College Hockey Challenge went smoothly last weekend. The education fair was flooded with high school students at times. Athabasca’s young hockey players posed with high-level athletes on the ice.

I remember first picking up the tenor saxophone in Grade 7; I was so proud that I had passed the required half semester of playing the clarinet to graduate to the instrument I really wanted to play.

We are less than a week away from Nomination Day in advance of the Oct. 16 Municipal Election, which means those interested in running need to be at their respective council office between 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sept. 18.
